UPMC Northwest Named Among Top Rural Hospitals in Patient Safety Rankings

UPMC Northwest is proud to be recognized among the nation’s top hospitals with a Leapfrog Top Hospital award in the category for Top Rural Hospitals, ranking among the highest performing facilities in the annual survey that evaluates the systems that hospitals have in place to prevent medical errors, decrease infection rates, and increase overall patient safety.

UPMC Northwest also received a top “A” grade in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group’s most recently awarded Hospital Safety Grade ratings. The latest ratings were released in December of 2019.

The hospital has now been awarded this top grade for the third time in a row, previously ranking in Fall 2018 and Spring 2019.

Fifteen UPMC hospitals received A ratings in the most recent report, with UPMC Northwest and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh receiving additional recognition with the Top Hospital awards.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization that aims to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers.

According to The Leapfrog Group, hospital patient safety rankings can be a life-or-death matter, with hospitals graded “A” saving more lives. More than 2,600 hospitals are rated by Leapfrog twice a year based on their ability to prevent medical errors, infections, and other harms to patients.

Evaluation Process

Each spring and fall, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D, or F score to hospitals across the United States. Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available safety data to assess participating facilities.
